MCCL was founded to protect the right to life for all vulnerable persons from conception to a natural death. We have fought just as hard against euthanasia and infanticide as we have fought against legalized abortion.
Unfortunately, government’s frequent attempts at so-called "cost containment" in health care inevitably lead to involuntary euthanasia and rationing.
From the pro-life perspective there are several elements of health care reform that are essential to ensure rationing does not occur.
Most Americans would be surprised at the number of proposals being pushed to limit what private citizens can spend on health care. If people have money and want to spend it on health care, they should be allowed to. Protecting the fee-for-service option and allowing people to spend their own money is necessary to avoid rationing.
It is certainly a worthy goal that every individual have access to quality health care coverage at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, when the government tries to take over and provide universal coverage, or a single-payer system, rationing is inevitable. Despite the government’s best intentions, there is not enough money in the budget to provide everybody the care they need and want, when and where they want it, without rationing.
Expanding access to private insurance is key
Quality health care for all without rationing is possible! One approach is to help as many people as possible enroll in private market insurance. One of the reasons why health care costs are rising is that more and more people are using health care, but doctors aren’t getting compensated adequately by public insurance. If more people had private insurance then providers could be properly compensated.
There are many different options that can be pursued to help all Americans get private insurance. One proposal put forward by the National Right to Life Committee is the idea of a sliding scale subsidy, paid for with a variable withhold, provided to individuals in need.
MCCL recognizes that health care reform is an incredibly complex issue. There are many possible approaches, but what is essential to keep in mind is that any health care reform must ensure that individuals are not denied necessary care based on their age, disability or quality of life.
