Planned Parenthood unworthy of public funds

Taxpayers should not be required to fund Planned Parenthood

More abortions = more taxpayer funds for state’s largest abortion provider

Planned Parenthood recently celebrated its 80-year history of business in Minnesota. An online history provides numerous factoids, but says nothing of the tens of thousands of lives it has taken through abortion. It also ignores the women who have been left to suffer in silence. Planned Parenthood has grown to be Minnesota’s largest abortion provider. At the same time, Planned Parenthood has become an expert at milking taxpayers for every penny it can get.

Family Planning money flows freely

In 2006, Planned Parenthood implemented a new federal family planning program, which it refers to as 4NOW. It was the organization’s first new source of federal family planning dollars in decades. Planned Parenthood also receives state taxpayer dollars for family planning services as well as additional federal dollars through the Title X program.

For all the taxpayer money Planned Parenthood has received for family planning, unintended pregnancy (and abortion) should be non-existent in Minnesota. But that’s not the case. In fact, it seems that every time Planned Parenthood gets more money (which, it should be noted, often increases the rate of abortion in areas where it locates), the organization comes back asking for even more the next year. It claims that Minnesota women will have no control over their reproductive lives unless taxpayers fund Planned Parenthood.

The Big Ticket: Abortion

But abortion is Planned Parenthood’s big-ticket item. Lucky for the abortion industry, it gets state taxpayers to pay for more than one-fourth of all abortions performed in the state. From July 1994 to December 2007, Planned Parenthood was reimbursed by the state for 5,303 abortions at a cost of more than $1.3 million. (Planned Parenthood actually performs many more abortions, but only a portion of them are paid for with tax dollars.) From 2000 to 2007, Planned Parenthood increased its taxpayer funded abortion business by a staggering 125 percent—all while claiming to be committed to reducing abortion.

Putting youth at risk

One would expect that an organization taking hundreds of millions of dollars from the public trough would be sure to follow the law and protect our youth—but with Planned Parenthood, don’t plan on it. In order to protect the privacy of its clients, the organization has a long history of covering up rape and incest perpetrated against youth. Tragically, this allows the abuse to continue—and profitable repeat abortions to occur.

'Health' provider?

Planned Parenthood's website touts the organization as “Your trusted local provider of health information and services,” but it is anything but that. Planned Parenthood may claim to be a “health” clinic, but in the eyes of MCCL and our more than 77,000 contributors, aborting what ought to be considered an unborn patient is not health care!

Time to end taxpayer subsidies

Unfortunately, the state and federal money pouring in to Planned Parenthood helps to legitimize the organization in the public’s perception. It is time to end the government subsidies to Planned Parenthood. It is time for the reality of Planned Parenthood to be exposed just as ACORN's reality was exposed.

MCCL urges ending taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood

It is very important that you contact your lawmakers and tell them that you have had enough with Planned Parenthood subsidies. MCCL has been advocating to end funding of Planned Parenthood for years, but we can't do it alone. You can help by becoming a member of MCCL and strengthening the voices of our lobbyists through your support of MCCL. Don't put it off—there will never be a better time than right now!
