Minnesota's largest abortionist receives tax dollars to subsidize work
Despite claiming a desire to reduce abortions, Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota (PPMNS) remains Minnesota’s leading abortion provider. PPMNS manages to increase the number of abortions it performs every year, even when the statewide total drops. In Minnesota, Planned Parenthood increased its abortion business from 2,452 procedures in 2000 to 3,911 in 2007, a 60 percent increase in seven years.
Planned Parenthood’s revenue:
$4.35 million: amount of grants from federal, state, and local governments to Planned Parenthood in 2007 (most recent report), including those for "family planning."
$24.66 million: total revenue in 2007 from all sources, including patient fees and the sale of contraceptives.
In 2007, more than 17 percent of PPMNS’s total revenue was provided by taxpayer dollars.
Taxpayer-funded abortions
Citizens not only fund Planned Parenthood through government grants, but also through direct reimbursements for abortion procedures. Minnesota taxpayers have been forced to pay for abortions for years.
In its 1995 Doe v. Gomez[link] decision, the Minnesota Supreme Court declared that women receiving medical assistance were entitled to abortions at taxpayer expense. The decision has been lucrative for Minnesota abortionists. Planned Parenthood has billed taxpayers for more than $1.3 million to perform 5,300 taxpayer funded abortions since the ruling.
