The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) used to provide invasive tests such as amniocentesis only to pregnant women older than 35 to screen for DS. The painful diagnostic procedure has a small but real risk of miscarriage.
Now the ACOG recommends offering DS screening to all pregnant women. Advances in noninvasive testing make the tests “safer” for women, 5 million of whom receive pregnancy care each year. (The $1,000 test for each woman could cripple the health care industry, Calvin notes.)
