Gianna Jessen: Saline Abortion Survivor

Saline abortion survivor speaks out against abortion

At 17 years old and 7-1/2 months pregnant, Gianna Jessen’s biological mother arrived at a California abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, and had a saline abortion.  Saline abortions are later-term abortions, taking place at 16 weeks or later in the pregnancy. Involved in a saline abortion is the removal and replacing of amniotic fluid with a strong, hypertonic saline (salt) solution. The unborn baby swallows and breathes in the solution, is burned from the inside out and poisoned, and later dies. Gianna spent over 18 excruciatingly painful hours in the hypertonic saline solution before her mother gave birth to a little girl who was very much alive. At birth Gianna weighed only 2 pounds and was in serious distress as a result of the botched abortion.

Normally, the abortionist would have, either by strangulation or drowning, "taken care of the situation." However, the abortionist had gone home and the attending nurse called an ambulance instead.

At the emergency room, Gianna was placed in an isolette and given little hope for survival.  The attempted abortion left her with cerebral palsy.  A foster parent was told that Gianna would never be able to lift her head or arms and could never be anything like "normal."  Fortunately, the prognosis was drastically erroneous.

Gianna has testified before Congress in support of various pro-life legislative initiatives. Below is an excerpt from her testimony before the Constitution Subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee on April 22, 1996:

"I am happy to be alive. I almost died. Every day I thank God for life. I do not consider myself a by-product of conception, a clump of tissue, or any other of the titles given to a child in the womb. I do not consider any person conceived to be any of those things.

I have met other survivors of abortion. They are all thankful for life. Only a few months ago I met another saline abortion survivor. Her name is Sarah. She is two years old. Sarah also has cerebral palsy, but her diagnosis is not good. She is blind and has severe seizures. The abortionist, besides injecting the mother with saline, also injects the baby victims. Sarah was injected in the head. I saw the place on her head where this was done. When I speak, I speak not only for myself, but for the other survivors, like Sarah, and also for those who cannot yet speak ..." (Read the Full Testimony)
