The history behind Minnesota's oldest and largest pro-life organizationMCCL was founded in 1968 by a small group of citizens who united to resist the legalization of abortion in Minnesota. In 1973 the Supreme Court of the United States decided Roe v. Wade and ruled that the lives of unborn children were not protected under the U.S. Constitution. This decision, in conjunction with the lesser-known Doe v. Bolton (1973) decision, legalized abortion in every state across the country, through all nine months of pregnancy, and for any reason. While the 1973 Supreme Court decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton appear to allow states to protect unborn children and their mothers in narrow circumstances, no meaningful protection has ever been upheld when brought before the Court. Since these rulings in 1973, well over a million unborn children have been killed each year from abortion while their mothers are left to suffer in silence. Many of these women have been injured by abortion and will never be able to complete a full pregnancy or have been left sterile.MCCL is Minnesota's oldest and largest pro-life organization with more than 70,000 member families and 240 chapters located in every corner of the state. MCCL is the sole Minnesota affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC). We educate our members and the public on issues relating to abortion, infanticide and euthanasia. We seek legal protection for unborn children and their mothers, the infirm, the elderly and otherwise vulnerable people. Through the legislative process, we work to see that protection is granted. Our mission is to secure legal protections for all innocent human life from conception until natural death.Furthermore, MCCL will support or oppose legislation that relates directly to the right of free speech and the right of pro-life citizens to seek redress from their government. It is because those rights bear on the ability of pro-life citizens to participate in the Right to Life movement and the political process that MCCL has an interest in such legislation.Be sure to stay up-to-date about the legislation of interest to MCCL and learn about our legislative history.
